Stan Medved has over 25 years experience in aviation as an aeronautical engineer, pilot and manager. He served in the Royal Australian Air Force as an Engineering Officer in various technical and management roles on C130, P3 and Mirage aircraft. Stan also completed RAAF pilot training and commanded C130 Hercules operationally and performed maintenance test pilot and simulator instructor duties.
On leaving the RAAF in 1994 Stan joined BHP Limited as an Aviation Adviser developing BHP’s aviation policies and standards and reviewing the operational, technical and safety performance of BHP’s contracted aviation companies. During 1996-2000 Stan was based in North America responsible for overseeing BHP’s aviation activities in the Americas.
With the merger of BHP and Billiton, Stan returned to the group’s Melbourne corporate head office to be appointed to his present position as the company’s Manager Aviation Safety. In this role he is responsible for BHP Billiton’s aviation activities in support of its worldwide minerals and petroleum exploration and production operations in over 30 countries. He has acted as a technical consultant on a number of government aviation projects and was responsible for Event Safety at the 2007 Australian International Airshow held at Avalon Airport, Geelong.
Stan remains in current flying practice on multi-engine turbine aircraft, holding Airline Transport Pilot and Commercial Pilot licences for aeroplanes and helicopters respectively. Additionally he has Bachelor of Engineering, Master of Business Administration, aircraft accident investigation and ISO 9001-2000 lead auditor qualifications.
Stan is a board member of the Aviation Safety Foundation of Australasia being recently appointed Deputy Chairman of the Foundation and is also Vice President of the International Airborne Geophysical Safety Association, based in Ottawa, Canada. Since 2005 Stan has been a member of RMIT University’s Program Advisory Committee (Aerospace and Aviation) and is also a corporate member of the Institution of Engineers, Australia and the Royal Aeronautical Society.
