Safeskies was launched in 1992 when Mr Bob Warn BEc FCILT, the then Chairman of Canberra section of the Chartered Institute of Transport (CIT), proposed a transport safety seminar and the then Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority, Mr Ted Butcher AM, offered a CAA ‘seed grant’ for an aviation safety conference.
Early support also came from Qantas, British Airways, Continental Airlines, Thomson CSF, the RAAF, Federal Airports Corporation, Hawker Pacific, and the Preston group; as well as the Royal Federation of Aero Clubs of Australia and the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation.
The first conference in 1993 was judged highly successful, and the biennial event has grown strongly since then.
The Safeskies President, Mr G A (Peter) Lloyd AO OBE MiD FCILT was invited to participate in the conferences from the first, and joined the organising committee (then still part of the CIT) as Chairman in 1997. In 2009 Mr Lloyd moved to newly-created role of President and Mr David Forsyth BE (Aero) Grad Dip FRAeS MILT became Executive Chairman.
